I now have a Behringer UMC202 as well as a 2i2 to experiment with. Initial
result is that both seem to work with Linux/RISC OS but the Focusrite is
better in terms of recording quality. e.g. see.

To see a comparision of the noise and THD for a test tone input. The 2i2
has about 10dB lower noise and much less distortion. Actual value for the
shown test is somewhere below 0.01% as the value printed is only two
decimals.
The UMC202 might be faulty, though. The 'pad' buttons don't seem to do
anything, so I've asked Behringer (who sent it for me to try out) in case
it is and I can try one that works better.
I'll do more tests.
