Since I didn't really get a definitive answer I took a punt and bought a
reel of RS 7481958.

It's about the same diameter (3.1mm) as cheap audio co-ax and has a
conductive layer with drain cable, so nice and easy to fit connectors
to.

Not really coax though, is it? What's the conductivity of the black
layer?

Yes it is. The centre conductor is surrounded by what looks like
polythene. Then the conductive layer, then drain, then outer insulation.

I bought a reel of excellent miniature coax many years ago, enough to
last a lifetime.
But as the label has fallen off I can't tell you where I got it.
Possibly Maplin but they don't seem to stock it now.
It had a black conductive layer with a proper braid outside.

Yes - I remember that stuff too and used to have some until it ran out.
Thing is it's rare here to have problems with the screening, so can't say
if it performed better or not in that respect.

Quad used a very thin coax with a dense braided screen between the inputs
and amp cards on the 405 - as it crossed the mains cables etc and ran
close to the mains transformer. But I couldn't find similar.

I found it odd that CPC has such a poor selection of audio co-ax. More of
a choice in colour than spec. Perhaps no-one makes their own these days.
