If you read uk.d-i-y, you may have seen a thread ("This appliance must
be earthed") about Dutch mains sockets, which are often unearthed.

If I plug a Cyrus 1 amplifier (which has an extremely metal case and a
stern label saying "This appliance must be earthed") into an unearthed
socket, do I risk death by electrocution, or worse, poorer sound
quality?

Look at your system as a whole. Only one piece of equipment should
have a mains earth. Any more than that and the system will hum because
of a small 50/60Hz voltage induced into the inductance of the loop.

For safety, you will normally put the mains earth on the item that has
most metal exposed, and which you handle the most. You can choose
which it is. My choice is to earth the amplifier as it sits at the
centre of a star of connections, and is always present, whatever else
I may add or remove. Everything else is grounded by the signal cables.
