Yup. Although decent thick curtains may look better.

Curtains work on the highs, but they do nothing for the lows.

Depends how thick the curtains are. ;-)

Proper acoustic curtains which are usually hung in double pairs, are
*very* expensive.

In our case for the 'hifi room'I used a rug which was bought for us as a
wedding present. It is (hand)made of a felt-like material. I hung it on the
wall from a curtain rail, spaced a few inches from the wall. Works quite
nicely and looks good.

Later on we bought a more conventional rug and used it in a similar way in
the living room. Also looks good and helps the acoustic.

I've done something along those lines, but I think you need quite a big
room to carry it off.

I'd also add that IME the speakers make a difference. I've found the
sealed box ATC I've been using for the past few years seem very unfussy
about placement, room and listening position. I've tried a few - ATC 7,
10s, 11s and now 19s. The 19s are overblown bass-wise if I turn up the
volume - but I don't do that too often. And the amp I'm using (a Quad
34/306) means I can dial it down a little if necessary.
