Default Tech Doc needed JBL system in Peugeot 406 Coupe

Hi,

Since about a month I own a Peugeot 406 Coupe. I bought it with the optional
Clarion / JBL RM2 audio system. Due to a faulty order at the dealer, the
audio system is delivered and installed without the JBL power amplifier. So
the speakers are fed by the orginal RM2 car radio from Clarion. We've tried
to do anything to get it installed afterwards, but Peugeot won't help here
(they say an install is impossible afterwards, this stinks and I don't
believe it off course).

As you can imagine, the audio quality of the resulting system is pretty bad
in relation to the system I ordered. Main reason is that the Clarion has
only a small built-in amp and no filtering or crossover is installed
(woofers and tweeters just parallel !). Now I'm looking for a solution to
obtain a better situation. To understand the orginal system better, I'm
looking for technical details of the JBL audio system (amp + speakers) as
normally installed in this car from Peugeot.

I've been looking heavily on WWW, but no detailed info about the system is
available at all. My dealer also can't help me, he just sucks in everything
that has to do with audio. Car-dealers just don't understand these kind a
things....

Anyone who can help me with technical details, or maybe tell me where to
find it ? Peugeot isn't an option, as far as I'm concerned....

Best regards,

Mischa van Santen

Hi Okkie, peidor, also from NL.

I even miss the remote-signal for the amplifiers.....

stll looking for
a) a way to enable the RCA (any technician on this forum ? )
b) a remote signal for the amplifier - power

Clarion won't answer, Peugeot won't help [flame]

Hi Peidor,
I am glad to hear that you work around the problem on your car.
Indeed, I don´t like standard HU on cars... but on this one, I wouldn´
like to mess to much with the systems since it is all integrated wit
the A/C, Warning readouts and others.

In fact, I have a fairly good Pioneer DEH-P750MP from my old car whic
I will not install as long as I could improve the sound of the standar
Clarion HD on the Peugeot.

I am not very familiar with some of the tech, you are suggesting coul
you explain me a little bit:

:remote for the amps branched from the regular ignition switch.

The power supply to the amp you get it directly from the ingnitio
switch. Is that what you mean?

:hi-level converter (caliber) on the signal for rear

A high level converter will solve the lack of RCA connectors. That wil
convert the output of the rear speakers to RCA for the Amp. Did I go
it correctly?

:sound quality isn't that bad .only real disturbing fact is that amps
:are always switched on (when key in contact and the thing
: doen't switch to powersave...)

I will consult with the guy that will help me, in case he has a bette
idea... though I guess you might know as much as he does. I am a newbi
in car audio.... as you might have realized by my questions.

I wonder how this guy, who has a similar car, did workaround th
problems we encountered?

I couldn´t find his email so as to inquire... if you do so please le
me know.

:nevertheless I think this is a very bad way of retaining
:customers. Both Clarion and Peugeot.

I agree.

:my advice: never put standard HU in a car. Buy your own. looks
:less good, but always has the best result in sound quality.

As I told you I still have the Pioneer one... but I am trying to find
solution so as not to change much the ¨look¨ of inside but improve a
much as possible the sound.

What I've done is basically the following:

remote for the amps branched from the regular ignition switch.
hi-level converter (caliber) on the signal for rear speakers, speaker
wiring disabled. Connected other speakers through amp.

sound quality isn't that bad .only real disturbing fact is that amps
are always switched on (when key in contact and the [flame] thing
doen't switch to powersave...)

nevertheless I think this is a very bad way of retaining customers.
Both Clarion and Peugeot.

my advice: never put standard HU in a car. Buy your own. looks less
good, but always has the best result in sound quality.

right. I know how he did that.

his install was initially the JBL / clarion set , available from
peugeot. It has output channels (RCA) and remote enabled. The same set
as we have, just modified internally. He extended the original set a
bit. The original set has a JBL amplifier in the same place where the
navsystem is installed in the back. And a few JBL speakers throughout
the car.

The door hasn't been modified that much. It isn't a custom built
enclosure , but basically a larger(?) hole with a compo-set or
kick-bass

can you do yourself, no sweat, it will "only" take the investment of
the equipment.

nevertheless, it looks nice .

Hi Edo,

below some answers (I hope)

:remote for the amps branched from the regular ignition switch.

The power supply to the amp you get it directly from the ingnitio
switch. Is that what you mean?

NO! the power should be provided through a separate cable (fused

30-60 amps , near battery). Ground can be made anywhere on the (bear
metal near the amp. check with multimeter

just the "remote" should be switched. you can leave the amp

powered. See the manual of the amp for ground (-) or12v (+) switchin
of the remote

:hi-level converter (caliber) on the signal for rear

A high level converter will solve the lack of RCA connectors. That wil
convert the output of the rear speakers to RCA for the Amp. Did I go
it correctly?
right. It takes some tweaking and a lot of listening before yo

have the correct levels. Can be bought in any car stereo shop, about 2
euros. again, read the installation-instructions
you can tweak both converter and amp-level.

:sound quality isn't that bad .only real disturbing fact is that amps
:are always switched on (when key in contact and the thing
: doen't switch to powersave...)

I will consult with the guy that will help me, in case he has a bette
idea... though I guess you might know as much as he does. I am a newbi
in car audio.... as you might have realized by my questions.

the electronics switch down all power after about 15 minutes

including the remote....
and remember, better to ask than to be sorry...

I had a pioneer in my previous car (also a 406) sounds great and i

easy to install.....
