Hello,
I have a jap import new shape toyota supra with the original car
stereo (2 unit thing) and original speakers.
Although the sound quality isn't that bad, the CD player is starting
to play up a bit (keeps on chucking CD's back out) and because its a
jap import, I can only get Radio 2 (can't go above freq of 90)
I've saved up a bit of cash and want to get a really nice car stereo,
but havent got a clue where to start. I like the idea of playing MP3,
so that would be a necessity in any new purchase, as would RDS. I
quite like the idea of a hard drive to store MP3's on, but these
stereos do seem to be pretty expensive (over £800????)
I really havent got a clue, so I have a few questions that hopefully
someone who knows a lot more about it than me can answer.
1. If I DID spend £800 on a car stereo, would my Toyota original
speakers cut the mustard or would I have to replace all them too? How
much is that likely to cost?
I think £800 is WAY over the top personally, you could get a damn good one
(with MP3, RDS etc) for more like £300. The rest you could spend on spekers
etc.
Take a look here for examples

2. If I wanted a sub woofer to really give me a better sound, where
would I put it in the car? There's not a lot of room anywhere..
The Boot, or there are a few that go under you seat, but I don't really no
anything about them.
3. Would I need an amp too? is that what the 2nd unit in the dash is
for?
Possibly. You definately need an amp for a sub speaker. An Active sub is a
easier alternative. I've got one of these and there more than enough for me

4. What is DAB and what makes it different from normal FM? Is it any
good?
It's ****e, don't bother
5. The Toyota Supra dash seems to be an all in one moulded affair,
and the original stereo seems to sit behind it with corners of the
dash overlapping. Does this make it a real pain for someone to fit a
new one?
As long as it's the standard size, it shouldn't be too bad.
Any advice would me most welcome. I havent got much of an idea and
don't want to go down the wrong route.
Thanks
