Default dumb newbie questions

Is there an FAQ for this group? If not, I have some pretty basic
questions which maybe some of you can help me with.

I'm having a classic car restored and I want to kit it out with a
reasonable stereo. It has a space for a centre dashboard speaker,
which was all it had when new. I plan on putting 2 speakers in the
rear. If they're really small, i.e. small enough to fit inside a 50mm
eyeball vent, 2 more in the front are possible, but not a requirement.

My preference is for an MD multichanger and a radio / CD head unit. I
don't want a CD multichanger for a number of reasons, to do with space
and convenience.

I know jack **** about this subject, frankly. I've found a Sony combo
of radio / CD plus 6 x MD multichanger online for £311.50, delivered.
It's called a SON-DJDM680X, and it produces 4 x 50w.

What speakers do I need with this? How much should I budget for
speaker cables? Do I need an amplifier and what do they do that the
basic package doesn't? Does anyone make stereo centre speakers, so I
can use the space for one in the dashboard? How would you link a
centre speaker to the outputs from the unit or the amplifier?

Should add that the guys assembling the car reckon they can fit
anything, but they're a bit vague when it comes to advice on what to
buy.

Budget is about £400ish. Musical taste is 1970s to present, excluding
rap and dance (unless it's Olive / Jody Watley / Everything But The
Girl type of 'dance'...yes yes I know I'm an old fart...you know what
I mean.)
