I recently swapped an old Philips CAR400 radio/cassette for a Kenwood
CD/tuner and it works fine, *but* when I use the phone, the audio mutes OK
but the phone output doesn't play through the speakers. Standard Nokia
hands-free kit is fitted and it worked fine before with the old
radio/cassette installed. Any ideas?

Sounds like the phone was connected to the CAR 400's audio input and
was using that to drive the speakers. Now a Kenwood has been fitted,
this functionality has been lost.
If you still want the phone audio through the car speakers you need to
fit a phone mute kit.
