Default Genesis Profile 4 vs Soundstream amp?

Dear all

I currently have the soundstream amp and I'm pretty pleased with it. I also
have the genesis stereo 100 which is bridged to power my sub. I was
considering to change/upgrade the soundstream to the profile 4 amp.

I would like to ask how much difference would the sound quality be from the
genesis compared to soundstream? Also note that most genesis amps are
underrated so the 45watts should push near 50watts I say. Also considering
the Genesis 4 channel...the bigger shiny chrome amp. Whats the difference
between this one and the profile 4...old and new designs?

Pros and cons also?

Thanks a billion!

Jim

Genesis Profile 4 amp

Signal/Noise Ratio 100dB.

Frequency Response 20-200Hz.

4 x 45 Watts RMS @ 4 Ohm 2 x 140 Watts RMS @ 4 Ohm Bridged

Variable Front High Pass Crossover @ 12dB Octave.

Variable Rear High Pass Crossover @ 12dB Octave.

Selectable Rear Low Pass Filter With Simm Modules.

CH 1 & 2 30-6000Hz

CH 3 & 4 20-200Hz

Soundstream USA305 amp

THD 0.1%

Signal to Noise 90 dB

Frequency Response 20 Hz to 20 kHz +/- 0.5 dB

Stereo Separation 90 dB

Damping 200

Input Sensitivity 100 mV - 2.5 V

Input Impedance 12 k ohms

Power 4 ohm - 35w x 4 + 100w x 1

Power 2 ohms - 60w x 4 + 160w x 1

Bridged Power - 120w x 2

Default Genesis Profile 4 vs Soundstream amp?

Profile range is mass made entry level. Whilst in the Genesis case this is
still a good amplifier their Series III amps are much better quality with
adjustable crossovers rather than plug in modules and the option I believe
for remote bass control. Can't tell you a lot about the Soundstream,
unfortunately the brand seems to have died and we've had no demand for it so
not been stocked for years so not really heard any of their products.

So in brief I don't think the profile series would be much of an upgrade but
the Series III amp may be worth looking into. Also maybe consider the
Phoenix Gold Ti 500.4. We've got both amps in our demo room if you're
anywhere near the midlands if you want a listen.

Default Genesis Profile 4 vs Soundstream amp?

Thanks Nick for the reply

I've actually heard the profile 4 on a set of MB Quart speakers which are
similar to mine. I can say the control was better than my SS amp and even
at high volume they was hardly any distortion at all. You state that the
Profile is mass made so this means the Series III are made to order? Would
like to ask if both Series and Profile are handmade in England or is that
all marketing hype?

I currently have two ST100 now which I am considering to use for each set of
front and rear speakers. Still left with the SS amp and nothing to power my
JLW0 with....would prefer of course a Genesis monoblock to keep inline with
the series range but how much do u sell them for? I need about 150-200rms
to push the ported box that I have designed.

Thanks!

To clarify. The Series III amps are all hand made from the ground up but on
the profile line things are not quite as detailed. I don't off the top of my
head know where everything is built etc. However Genesis don't market the
profile series as hand built in England:

http://www.genesis-ice.com/profile/profile.htm

Looking at the power ratings etc I don't think a mono block would be at all
suitable for a w0 subwoofer.

Personal opinion speaking here I'd use Stereo 100 on the fronts. Get a
Stereo 60 for rears and Bridged Stereo 100 on the sub. That would give more
power to the all important front stage and sub and just give the rears
enough to give a small amount of "fill" for rear passengers.

If you require any prices on any particular Genesis amp either call our
sales line on: 0116 244 9846 or drop me an e-mail direct.

Profiles use SMT assembly, with some hand finishing. They're marketed
as being assembled in the UK though.
