OK, then perhaps you could swap in a bigger Zetec to speed things
up. There are lots of Zetec performance sites around. As to the
clutch, others would have a better idea than I; that's not a car
that's sold in North America. And for the stereo, perhaps some of our
European correspondents would have some info. Or try Google. I found

Thanks Stephen. Great help. How hard is it to change engines? What is the
success rate?

Well, I've never swapped an engine, and your model of Escort never made it
to North America, and the only Escort with a Zetec over here was Mazda-based,
and, ....
Well, you get the idea. I don't really know. It seems like there are
many Englishmen who have done this sort of thing, and the fact that
you are putting in an engine from the same family from the same
manufacturer gives hope. Googling on "zetec performance" and "zetec
swap" should get you going.
What is the
success rate?
Well, people have made much trickier things work, such as fitting a
Zetec into a Fiesta.

You just swap the engine and the wiring etc. As long as it's say, a 2.0 from
another Escort into an Escort, it should be fairly easy. If you decide you
want to get something like a Rover 3.5 V8 (Buick 213 for the Americans) into
the car you'll find it rather complicated.

Even easier, bearing in mind the OP's seeming limits and inexperience, would
be to sell this one and buy a faster one. It'd certainly be a lot cheaper to
buy and insure than a conversion.
