Default Kenwood Z838W Problem ?

I got a new Z838W for Christmas, and very nice it is too. Problem is, I had
to send it back to the supplier because of the problem below (will be
replaced etc.). Out of interest, does anyone know what it was, or could be?

Any radio station, no matter how local/strong the signal had a high pitched
whistle/buzz in the background. When you switched to CD playback, the
whistle was still audible (unless the volume was really loud).
Disconnected the aerial, and just got white noise from the tuner. However
this too was audible during CD playback.

Tried another aerial without success, also tried wiring in a suppressor to
the live, and then switched live. All without success.
Finally installed unit into test bench at local Halfords, and it was still
audible, so the cause was the unit.

Anyone know what this is? Easy to fix?

Just interested to know really.

Happy New Year.

H.
