Default Harddisk MP3 Headunit

In looking for a new head unit I am also considering a harddrive based job.
Whilst searching for posts on this they all seem to be pretty old! Did the
hard disk units never take off? Whats available at the moment... apart from
buying an IPod or similar and attaching that?

TIA

Seems the IT storage factories are waking up to HDD-in-car
opportunities. They are looking to increase storage capacity, reduce
size but particularly to increase reliability for what is seen as a
hostile operating environment (shock, temperature, vibration) of a car.

There are HDD untis out there - one which shares 20Gb between SATNAV and
MP3 but given the above I couldn't comment on the reliability.

Anyone have any experience of them?

Dension seem to be the market leader as far as I can tell. I'll be getting
one of these bad boys when I get my next car...I think they do a complete
hard disk based head unit, or an additional component for your existing
setup...
