Default Surround sound in cars?

I've got a 1992 Toyota Sera with the factory SLSS system (Super Live
Surround Sound). This wasn't true surround, but a DSP system with 10
speakers - Front cone x 2 (10cm, IIRC), Front Tweeter x 2, Centre
Speaker (10cm again, I think), rear cones and tweeters in a tube on the
parcel shelf which could be rotated to reflect off the rear window or
aim directly into the car, and a rear subwoofer of probably inadequate
capability.

The SLSS processor is as is fashionable, completely shot, so I'd like to
reuse the factory speaker locations (aiming to find components that
match the yellow finish of the factory install) with better speakers and
drive them with a modern double-DIN or single DIN package; ideally I'd
like to incorporate DVD and/or satnav into it, but the cost would
probably be prohibitive for the latter.

I'm guessing what I would need is to replace the speakers in the rear
speaker tube with modern equivalents (10cm midrange, tweeters, they
currently have a capacitor crossover) - what is in there is 14 years old
and rated 15W/4 ohm - and likewise with the door speakers and dash
tweeters. The subwoofer box contains, IIRC, a 12cm driver and a small
amp, which can no doubt be improved upon. Driving the centre speaker is
the biggest hangup for me, I think.

What options do I have to retain the 'surround' functionality of it?

Also, just how rubbish are the MP3/DVD etc. things being sold on eBay
from Hong Kong? They look dodgier than a very dodgy thing being sold by
someone quite dodgy.

Richard
