Default replacement antennas, how good?

Hi all,

Here's my dilemma, I've replaced the head unit in my Discovery with a
JVC system that has DAB but I have a couple of antenna issues.

The original unit has a pair of diversity antennas built into the rear
side windows for FM and uses one of them for AM. The JVC is connected
to the side that has the normal motorola style connector on it but
performance isn't too good. It's not completely deaf so I don't think
it's an amp powered by the head unit issue, I just think it's too
short and in a poor location.

DAB has its own amplified roof mounted antenna that works OK apart
from one really annoying problem. D1 and the BBC broadcast from about
10 miles away and behind a hill, Crapital is transmitted from a local
mast and if I'm this side of the hill it completely knocks out the two
national networks. Before Capital came on air everything worked fine
so I know it's an overload problem, but is it in the amplifier or the
receiver?

Looking through the group archives I can see there are now a number of
different multiband solutions but has anyone actually installed one
and compared it to window mounted originals, both on AM or FM. Are any
of them amplified and if not how lossy is the RG174 that is commonly
used for the DAB drop?

Paul
