Replacement Blaupunkt system for a new Golf GTI?
Seems an odd upgrade, the RCD 300 is fine and the car has at least 8 if
not
10 speakers, mine has 10 working but on the MKiv forum there is talk of
the
2006 model only having 8, I have had my Golf since March and have no
worries
about the standard radio set up, I have seen pics of the facia adaptor
with
a head unit fitted , the combination certainley spoils the look of the
interior, personally for the cost of another HU, money maybe better spent
on
options like an ipod adaptor or the phatnoise which was under 200ukp.
Personal preference I suppose, but I found the RCD 300 to be rubbish, drove
me crazy after 3/4 days. Base was ok but mid-range and tonal quality were
terrible, cheap and nasty. IMO money spent on an Alpine or similar is VERY
well spent, and if you get the right set up it will look good and of course
you can hang on to the original (you wouldn't get more than £20 on eBay for
it anyway) and refit it before selling. The speakers on the other hand seem
well up to the job for everyday use.
Regards
Martin

What do you mean drove you crazy?
Japanese units are very boom fizz, is that the sound you were seeking?
Can you post a picture of the single headunit adaptor in a Golf Mk5.
Does the other features like speed senisitive volume still work?

Crazy = irritating because it sounded wrong and spoilt the enjoyment of the
music, even voices sounded 'boomy'. My current Pioneer sounds great. Sorry
no pics and I haven't got anywhere to post them currently, you'll probably
find some on the mkiv forums or vwvortex. Basically the single din unit
goes in either the upper or lower slot and the unused slot can have another
audio unit, a blanking plate (doesn't look so good imo), or a 'cubby hole'.
GALA doesn't work on my system, that's not to say it won't work on others,
but I consider that a small price to pay for decent sound.

Maybe you do, but the original poster was considering upgrading to a funline
range, the units in VW are Blaupunkt and the funline is budget stuff hardly
an upgrade to the OE.
After spending the better part of 20K on a car buying an inferior head unit
to replace the OE does not seem sensible to me,
Money would be better spent on a speed camera detector than the funline
range, if he does change the head unit , it makes sense to keep the the OE
for when he comes to sell the car, as folk on the used car market prefer
standard cars to modified examples.
You mention that you lurk on the MKiv forum, so know that what I mention is
the experience of others as well as myself.

I think if you do a search of the mkiv forums you'll find general agreement
that the RCD300 is pants.

No worse than the funline range, you cannot deny, look at the specs, which
is what the OP asked about.
The MK5 gti is enough to enjoy , I wouldn't spoil mine by adding a inferior
head unit.

Having noted the comments about the Funline Blaupunkts, I didn't realise
they were low-end. I'm just exploring the replacement options and I thought
all Blaupunkt were a potential upgrade, but I'm a novice at this.
What would be a 'significant' head replacement, sound-wise, bearing in mind
I just want tuner, cd and possibly mp3?
I don't mind spending a bit to get a top head unit and good speakers. Any
maker recommendations? Clarion, Alpine, Pioneer?
Thanks in anticipation and Happy New Year to all here.

John.
The HU in the VWs are Blaupunkt, the Los Angeles is/was a good unit , Before
I had my MK4 Golf, I was loading my other cars with 2 amps and speaker
upgrade dsp etc in the MK4 The sound was not asgood as the multi amp set up
but was ample, I could not be bothered to pull the car apart to run wires,
the GTI MK5 is even more congested under the bonnet so I doubt I will be
doing anything to it either.
I would have favoured MD so did look at the adaptors but seeing a picture of
one put me right off, perhaps a unit with dsp and satnav with a large screen
would do the trick, does the 2006 model have black trim as opposed to grey?

John
I suggest:
1. Get the GTI and live with the audio for a couple of days and see what you
think.
2. If you don't think it's good enough, upgrade to an Alpine/Pioneer/Becker
etc. have a look at this link for some discussion:
http://www.uk-mkivs.net/forums/407832/ShowPost.aspx - you're obviously going
for the sound quality you want and something that looks right, option to
change the button colours to match the other switches is important.
3. Only consider changing the speakers if you don't think they're up to
scratch, but I think you'll find they are with a decent HU.
