Default Using factory steering controls for new HU

Hi folks,

I live in Malaysia and have just bought a new Proton. It comes with an
OEM Blaupunkt MP3 head unit with what looks like an ISO connection at
the rear. My steering wheel has six factory-installed audio control
buttons: Vol Up, Vol Down, Mute/Pause, Next, Previous, Mode.

I want to change the head unit to what will likely be either a high-end
single-DIN Sony or Alpine.

I am assuming that as the OEM head unit is a Blaupunkt one, the
steering controls interface is likely one you'd find on any Blaupunkt
head unit, so you could in theory put in a retail Blaupunkt HU and the
steering controls would work fine - is this generally the case?

And assuming this is the case, are there adaptors available that will
convert the Blaupunkt-specific steering controls to be compatible with
either a retail Sony or Alpine HU?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,
Rudi

Oops - huge apologies, that is what I intended to do! I wanted to post
this to the two car audio forums, but somehow made the mistake of
posting to uk.rec.audio instead of rec.audio.car.

Apologies for the "spam".
