Being Socially Useful
Hi
I haven't posted for a while, but seeing an amplifier get a rave
review when it has a distortion level of 2.3% rising to 4% at full
output provoked me. Its the Graaf GM20 reviewed in the November issue
of Hi Fi World. Yours for a mere £3,300. Is the world going mad? I
though that the idea was that amplifiers had as little distortion as
possible. 0.1% as Harold Leak used to claim.
What would he have made of all this? He wrote:
'I believe that the individual engineer should be able to derive
pleasure and satisfaction from the knowledge that has come to him from
his endeavours. But he is not being socially useful unless the
knowledge is translated into physical apparatus, which can be made
available to as many people as possible. To do this the price of the
apparatus must be within their spending capacity.'

Its all relative.....I could easily spend that much on an amp for my
collection, and not think it expensive.
But I spoke to a mate yesterday who has just spent about £50,000 on his new
kit.
I can remember when it was hard spending £20 on speaker cable.
Some people will still find it hard to do so.
One of the hi fi mags had £30,000 cables in the other month, if someone
makes it someone will buy it.
HiFi is like cars you can go from a 10 year old £300 car to a £60,000
sports car, there is always someone with the" spending capacity "

ps to spend 50,000
sme 20/2a £5,300
krell £11,000
krell £9,000
wilson £12,000

I guess, but would you pay that amount for an amp that distorts by 4%
at full output? Or maybe the reviewers were influenced by the fact
that the amp was the most expensive in the test?

Sounds OK for a guitar amp.
Oh and if your test material for a £3k amp is Christina Aguilera (see the
review at http://www.ukd.co.uk/scms/news-detail.asp?PKID=24) you're probably
not a full shilling anyway.

I'm *sure* that goes on to a degree. After all, when someone is faced with
a "super hi-fi gizmo" it is sometimes difficult to believe that it could
possibly sound worse than a cheaper alternative.
OTOH, we put up with valve amps quite happily and they can easily be
measured to be inferior to solid state. We actually *like* distortion to a
degree, so perhaps that's the answer.

There is something about that album by Christina Aguilera, that's
different, she's not my cup of tea, but have heard it, and it is challenging
ok!
I do not care what the figures say for any amp, be it a reported 000.5% or
0.5% I go for mark 1 ears
