I am about to invest in a high-end Toslink optical cable, and I have
narrowed the field down to these cables: Supra X-ZAC, van den Hul
Optocoupler Mk. II or Transparent High Performance TosLink.
Does anyone have a view on which cable is the better one of these? Are there
any other cables I should add to my list?

Thanks!

Arild

Yes, or Maplins.....

Goto http://www.maplin.co.uk/ and search 'toslink' for a comprehensive
selection including stuff like couplers, converters, splitters and the like
at 'sensible' prices.....

Neither. They are both junk.

but did you know that long TOSLINK cabling can 'stretch' the digital bits? this stretching has a terrible effect on sound quality. You should try to stick to a shorter length, using an opto-dynamically compensated cabling run.

It just so happens that I have a three meter run of such a cable here which I purchased for only 48,000 pounds (and 99 pence).

I'd be happy to let it out of my hands for offers around half that amount - bearing in mind that I have regularly cleaned the contact area with oil of ophidia in order to ensure the absolute crispest of digital reconstruction at the far end of the cable.

There's no such thing as a high-end toslink cable. Just overpriced
ones, that will perform precisely the same as cheap ones.

You also need to be very careful how you set out the cable. You *must* have
an even number of left/right bends in it else the stereo image loses
definition, and if you have perfect pitch make sure the start and finish of
the cable are at *exactly* the same height. because of the high speed of
light compared to the speed of sound, a fraction of a mm can make all the
difference.

Hi Arid,

I got a Supra X-ZAC and it does seem to sound better than the "cheapie"
Toslink cable that came with my Meridian DAC.

So, I would recommend the X-ZAC. (But I haven't tried the others you named).

The cheapie is currently in use between my digital radio and my av

Hi Wally,

Mainly an improvement in high frequency "quality". The cheapie cable that
came with the DAC sounded too "edgy" and a little "bass shy".

By comparison, the X-ZAC sounds a bit sweeter (less edgy, less sibilant) and
hence the sound balance has, to me at least, shifted more towards the
neutral balance that I was looking to achieve.

Does the fact that opinions are maybe 10:1 against an expensive cable
making any difference whatsoever suggest anything to you?

And wasn't the one dissenting opinion from someone who, having wasted
money on a super-cable, badly NEEDS it to be better? :=_

Yup, some people have cloth ears ...!
Or maybe some people don't take it seriously enough?
Or they haven't got a clue what they are listening for?
Or lots of other reasons....!

How do you know this to be the case?
Or don't you allow people to make their own choice, just because you
disagree with it?
Or maybe other people, who do know, cannot be bothered to enter a newsgroup
like this coz they know they are going to be slagged off by people who
prefer Maplins/Argos/AN Other store to make a money out of them.

Whatever happened to free speech - instead you get put down for voicing an
opinion, by people who don't even know you?
Typical if you ask me, but you didn't so I won't go on..!

Does the fact that opinions are maybe 10:1 against an expensive

Yup, some people have cloth ears ...!
Or maybe some people don't take it seriously enough?
Or they haven't got a clue what they are listening for?
Or lots of other reasons....!

You do realise the bandwidth of TOSlink is FAR *FAR* below the
capability of the fibre it uses? heck, you could probably get it to work
with no fibre at all if you put the devices back-to-back. Are you going
to suggest that air has *remotely* similar optical properties to 3
metres of glass?

Whatever happened to free speech - instead you get put down for
voicing an opinion, by people who don't even know you?

you didnt get put down for speaking, you got put down for being a dork
;-)
