Tim,
I'm certain it was M-Crew that screwed mine up too but cos it was less than
30 days old they agreed to a replacement.
but unless there is an upgrade to the software it's not going to be any
better.
Also my friend has one of the older LH1000 models and that has gone the same
way although that was always a bit flaky.
If only the PC drivers gave access to the disc then you could back it up
easily and save a lot of hassle

Haven't heard a dickie-bird since mid-November. I'm going to shout at
them when I get around to it.

I insisted on repair instead of replacement and made it clear that
unless they tell me what was wrong with it and what they fixed I won't
be accepting it back, or a new one with the same design fault.

I think the software is probably to blame, so no amount of repair will
help. The fact that you have had the same issue adds weight to my
fears.

Hi All,

I have had to send mine back too, but for different reasons. Faulty CD
player. To begin with it would read 2 out of three disks..after a
couple of weeks and eventually ripping 300 cd's it must have read
about 1 in 20. But with patience I could get it to read a cd just by
trying and trying again. Also the noise the CD player made makes me
wonder if it has not damaged the disks.

I have asked for it to be repaired as I do not want to lose all the
cd's I have uploaded..I just hope that was the right thing, as it is
so disappointing that I cannot read the Hard Disk through my PC, only
with the Sony software. I want/need to be able to browse the player
through Windows Explorer so that I can back the damn machine up and
also so that I can use Windows Media Player or something similar to
play the files.

My goal was to 'eventually' use it as a slave drive being driven by a
PC with a touch screen in the living room, playing through my surround
sound system and using something like Media Player as the front
end...Sony confirmed that I could do this before I bought the player.
But it cannot be done. Yet Media Player is so much nicer to use and
fun. Also as the pc is permanently connected to the internet it seemed
like a good idea, especially that the player picks up all the track
listings for the ripped cd's at the gracelands site.

The search being case sensitive is a pain, especially with the remote
control. It is so much easier to operate through a pc and the Sony
software..so I still think the pc option is the way forward, but I
will have to set up differently to what I wanted and use the Sony
software (eeeek). I just hate being pigeon holed into using products
not of my choice. The software really needs to be upgraded and
revamped. It should be able to do so much more and to be more friendly
and versatile. My opinion though, personally, the player itself only
really becomes practical when attached to a pc as to use it from the
remote control and/or front panel is just horrendous.

Was it worth buying? Am not convinced yet.

I am just concerned that after all this work I have done that I will
lose everything and not be able to restore. Your problems scare me!

But I will let you all know what happens to my unit..and I hope all
your problems are resolved!

Jeez it get's worse!!!!

Would it have been so difficult to make the disc format compatible with
windows so a quick Drive Image would make everything safe???
I had intended having a go at writing some better software but it looks like
one mistake and everythings gone so I guess it's a non starter.

I've just got my replacement unit today so here we go again.
I will use M-Crew very sparingly though, not every dozen or so cd's like I
did before.

I'm confused? Why use the Sony at all? Why not just buy a big external HDD,
attach it you PC and rip to that. A 250gb Maxtor will cost around £200, add
a few quid for a new soundcard if you don't have a decent one already and
you're sorted. Use iTunes as a the front-end and the whole shebang is easy
to use.

If you then want to make it 'look' good, network in a smart laptop or hush
PC with a TFT screen and use that as the 'client' next to your stereo

I suppose because it is a dedicated unit and doesn't sound too bad at all,
personally I hate the sound of MP3's
My intention once i get it loaded up was to use it upstairs away from all
the other gear
If I was to go the PC way i'd end up using shn's and they still eat up disc
space

Why didn't I use a pc option and a large hard disk in the first place?
Well that was due to cost. Storage is relatively cheap, but a 'decent'
sound card is expensive and so is the touch screen flat monitor that I
want in my setup. Would probably put it on a new server and network
into my exsisting pc. The idea was the have the flat screen in the
living room and the rest of the hardware upstairs in an office, well
away from everything. You must be looking at 1500 quid for a really
good setup like that perhaps a bit less.

So as an interim measure it was to use the Sony solution, where it
could be kept for now in the living room and to rip all the cd's onto
that. When I had the money I could then use the Sony as a slave drive
on the pc solution above...remember, Sony, said I could do this. I was
just not aware that:

a) There was no visible drive when connected to a pc..so no browsing.
b) I would be forced to use their own software which I had not
evaluated when I knew of other software that I prefered to use and
would do the thinbgs that I wanted it to do.
c) There was no backup solution available. At least on a pc setup I
could ghost or just copy onto more storage. This is a 'real' flaw in
my opinion. Tell me of a person that has not had a computer glitch and
lost everything. It does not happen often but it damn well happens
sometime. Hard disks are durable but not flawless.

I suppose I just feel a bit let down that the Sony solution is not as
flexible as I was led to believe, nor as 'easy to use'.

My ideal 'want' was to be able to create a playlist from my hard disk
recorder, be able to burn onto a cd when connected to a pc and then
play in the car (or that type of thing)...now thats what I call
flexibility!
