Depends on your definition of pro. I saw lots of Revox A77s in pro
studios in the 70's used as delay/echo/slapback units.

Well, yes. But I assume the OP wants it for record/replay purposes - not
as an outboard FX unit?

We are splitting hairs but I do agree with you in principle.

Well, I'd say you can't call a deck professional unless it uses balanced
ins and outs at the standard 'zero' level. I'd also expect it to be easy
to edit on. The A77 - fine though it is - satisfies neither.

Like I said, we are splitting hairs and I would like to see you edit on a
Nagra or Stellavox. I would call a professional deck any deck that is
often used by professionals, so that would include the A77, B77 PR00 and
the Uher Report.

True, but these are specialised portable machines mainly for location
recording. And have balanced connections.

Thins like a Uher Report aren't used by pro recording engineers - they're
designed, funnily enough, for reporters.

Studer is the pro range from the same company as Revox.

The BBC used Ferrographs running at 1 7/8ths and triple play tape to log
the output of NASSA during the various Apollo missions. So does that make
it a pro system in the usual meaning of the word?
