I am looking for a replacement headphones to listen to MP3's on a Sony
-Ericsson p900 mobile phone, and cash funds willing, an iPod in the near
future.

I'm looking for something smallish.
I've had a look at a few:

Sony MDR-EX71SLB earbuds
Sony S2 MDR-G57G Street Style
Sennheiser PX200
Sennheiser MX50

So far the PX200 is tempting me but will my SE P900 be able to power it?
Will the 'bigger' headphones achieve less volume than the smaller one?
Overall I'm looking for max volume and of course best sound quality. I
listen mostly to Jazz Funk and Soul.

Has anyone had any experiance with the above choices? New product idea most
welcome.

Thank you

I own 2 pairs of PX200s - one pair for leisure and travel, the other pair to
use with my camera kit. They're terrific IMO - efficient, comfortable and
portable. In comparison, I found my previous Sony Streetstyleeee 'phones
uncomfortable (they press uncomfortably on the ears are aren't practical if
you wear glasses). As for in-ear designs, the Sony MDR-EX71s are the best
value I've heard in the UK market (and the least uncomfortable I've worn)
but still aren't a patch on the PX200s. Certainly the Sennheisers - whether
through efficiency, better frequency response, closed-backness or a
combination of the three - give the sound I percieve to be the loudest.

I've a set of these, and they're very good for when you're out and about as
they block out nearly all the outside sound. The only problem is that you
start hearing your own breathing because all the other background noise is
pretty much miffled out. They sound loud because there isn't really any
background noise, just the music, but I've no idea of what their sensitivity
is compared to other headphones.

Thanks for the reply.
Just one question, are they small enough to put inside jacket pocket?
I know I should just go and see one in a shop, but work hours are not
letting me at the moment.

I'm kinda heading towards buying a set of these. I would prefer the PX200
for sound quality, but with the Sony's I can just shove them in my pocket
when I go out.

Yes, no trouble - they fold up like a pair of glasses and the cable can be
wound around the folded headphones for neatness and as an anti-knotting
measure. They come with a glasses-case-style container, but they're more
portable simply folded. I've had no trouble with them in an inside pocket
next to an MD.

Do try to check them out - they are great.

They're not bad actually. Far better than most earphones and they actually
seem to produce half decent bass.

The MDR EX-70/71 are on the upper end of efficiency.

I have a number of pairs of ear buds, and here are my reactions to them:

Koss "The Plug" $19.95 US$ I got a pair from Circuit City on a whim, and
they turned out to be easily worth twice the price. An unbelievable value.

Sony MDR EX-70 or MDR EX-71 $33-40 US$. More bass and treble than "The Plug"
but that might mean that "The Plug" is smoother. A little less efficient.

Shure E-2 used to be about 80 US$, now selling for more like $100. The E2c
differs from the E2 in terms of packaging. More highly robust than Hi-Fi.
Very smooth but rolled off at both ends. With a little equalization they can
be very nice.

Etymotic ER-6 about 120 US$. Etymotic ER6s are all about treble and not
about bass. They are also not very efficient. If you want a bright, clear
sound, don't like a lot of
bass, and have a source with some guts behind the headphone jack (more
drive than a Creative Nomad 3), they are worth a listen. It strikes me that
ER6s and those low-output European iPods could be a match made in Hell for
people who don't have utterly sensitive ears.

Generally, In-Ear-Monitors deliver the ultimate in "close-up" sound. Many
take advantage of the physical seal and tiny enclosed volume to deliver some
of the most ear-popping but non-boomy bass you've ever heard. The E-2s and
the ER-6s have enough bass roll-off that this is not usually the case unless
you apply some
eq.

They inherently provide considerable reduction of ambient noise, which is
both the good and bad news. If you are using them and someone wants to get
your attention...
