Floor standing speaker recommendations?
I have just got a Cambridge Audio 640 Amp and CD, which sounds mighty
fine.
I tried a pair of TDL Studio 10's from Richer Sounds, great sound, but
the bass blew the front room windows out... Probably OK for a loft
apartment or a Cathedral.
I have an old pair of Celestion DL8's on stands which have a fantastic
midrange but lack any bass oomph.
Any suggestions on what speakers I should try for no more than 350
notes.

Why not try the TDL Studio 10?
It apparently sounds great and has plenty of bass.

Are you suggesting that the TDL has a boosted bass response?
Or are you just saying that you can't cope with any loudspeaker
that has a well-extended flat bass response?
If the latter, there's no hope for you. :-)
Is it a bass-reflex cabinet?
If so, a sock in the port helps.

The TDL is a big big box, with twin woofers and a rear bass port.
I had them away from the walls with socks in the ports and the bass tone
control all the way down (-ve), still the bass guitar on something like
Cowboy Junkies (Female vocal - rocky western style, not heavy at all)
sounded like the bass amp was on the coffee table and the singer was
next door!
Anything Techno sounded like being in a club - your rib cage was being
resonated!
Actually dance music sounded OK because obviously its supposed to be
bass heavy, Cowboy Junkies was just un-listenable.
Basically too much air being moved in too small a room!
I reckon they'd be great in a 30x20 foot room.
I'm after a speaker with a bit more presence and a little more bass than
the Celestions, but not a window rattler like the TDL's.

The bass problem is likely due to the room size rather than a problem with
the speaker. Try moving the speakers to a different position or firing them
the other way across the room or even diagonally. Try not to have the
listening position hard up against the rear wall, or at the half way point
in the room as these will be the worst places for room boom.
As for speakers, if you can still find a pair of Mission 773e, they will be
within your price range and are astoundingly good for the money. They would
be a revelation after the TDLs ;-)

Yep, I guessed as much! Need a bigger house!
Audio T has some ex dem Mission773e's for £250.
I may try and get a listen to them.
Richard, I have a pair of Tannoy 611 (mk 2) floorstanders which new
cost £400 (with plinths). They give amazing all round sound, with a
very low bass responce, without being 'boomy'. They are also of a
closed cabinet design which helps tighten the bass in confined spaces.
Where in the UK are you Richard, as I have been considering selling
these to upgrade to a pair of B&W's.

Ray, I'm in Reading.
I've sent this a few times but it doesn't seem to get through to the
server.
