I don't think trying to save an unsuspecting newbie from spending
unnecessary money on an optical cable, or worse an overpriced 'digital
coax'.

My original point was that advising someone to make their own isn't much
good as advice - if they know how to do it, they're unlikely to ask newbie
questions. Making your own is almost always cheaper because the labour of
manufature is removed from the cash outlay, but that doesn't mean it's
neccessarily a viable option.
