It's rarely cheaper as what you gain by saving the labour is lost by
having to pay the retail cost of the bits.


For cheapie stuff, I would agree, but I'd imagine that there's a point where
the ready made product is substantially more expensive than the components.
(I was speaking in general terms, BTW, not neccessarily about cables.)
