Cleaning Heads in the UK!
I've run out of my dear old supply of 90% Isopropyl Alcohol - and have found
out that this essential item for tape head cleaning is NOT AVAILABLE over
the counter in the UK...
As a person who already knows those stupid "head-cleaning tapes" don't
really do such a great job, I find it odd that such a simple thing as
Isopropyl Alcohol isn't available, even at the Rx counter. At the various
"stereo" stores all one finds are drones with "just my shelf, mate" written
all over their faces when you ask what would otherwise be a simple question.
So what do intelligent people use to clean their tape heads properly here?
Has the EU has made it illegal to possess it or something? Thanks in
advance.

I bought some from my local chemist a few weeks ago.

Steve,
You're looking in the wrong places. www.maplin.co.uk list Isopropyl Alcohol
and I'm sure that many other spares suppliers do to.
Never go to Dixons for anything ever

Although expensive at £5 a can I've found the servisol stuff good,
particularly the switch cleaning aerosol, which Maplins sell along with the
canned alcohol.
But back on topic - you can (quite) easily get isopropyl in small
quantities, say 1L, from a chemist. You have to put up with a load of
questions and suffer a degree of indignity but they will sell it IME.

Every Rx counter I've dealt with in the past year has told me that Iso
Alcohol is a controlled substance that they are prohibited to sell, and
refused to discuss it further. God knows what diabetics have to go through
here.

As I said, even at the Rx (prescription) counter - it's where I used to get
it in the US. Over the regular counter the stuff is only 70% with water. I
don't want no steenking water residue on my heads! So I always went to the
pharmacist counter to get the 90% alcohol. It wasn't until I saw the supply
I brought with me starting to dwindle that I started checking around, only
to be told it was a "controlled substance". And given the bizarre nature of
some regulations in the UK/EU - like the one prohibiting a wall light switch
inside a bathroom! Priceless! - I'd come to think I was going to have to
either smuggle some in, or use a lot of those awful "cleaning tapes".
