Hi,

Please could you suggest which hi-fi magazines are most useful to help short-list kit?

I've always found the hifi pages at the back of Gramophone to be the
most trustworthy.

Me too,

Hifi World, for me at least, seems one of the sanest around.

Their opinions about kit seem the most sensible and consistent over
time that I have read.

Regards

LKJ Setright? I thought he was the classic eccentric English motoring
journalist.

(Didn't even know he was still alive!)

He is, and still writing (excellently) for Car magazine.

Hardly ever these days. He made a guest appearance last month but, other
than that, I haven't seen him in Car for some years now

Hey! I knew him from Bike, 30 years ago. No-ones more surprised than me to
still see him alive, let alone coherent!

Hifi mags don't rank componants anymore - they depend too much on advertising.
therefore you can't expect them to even give you a straight answer to "Rank A,
B and C for sound quality". HiFi plus avoids it completely. HiFi News used to
use Collums rankings which were better than nothing. What HiFi ranks stuff on
'value for money plus looks plus sound plus the price of cheese times k' No
better. There are annual awards but, well, what did they ever tell you. Most
reviewers don't even list the valves and type of circuit used. Of course they
do inform us of helpful things like gold plated phono sockets. When did you
last see any that weren't? And of course three or four paragraphs about
favourite bits of their favourite artists on their favourite CDs.
