Default Micro hi-fi with DAB?

Maybe not quite right Dave. The broadcasters think that the public
want it crushed to hell,

Indeed. My statement was meant tongue in cheek.

plus that the vast majority of radio listeners
these days are in the car (where compression can be a positive
advantage) or aspiring weeny-boppers hidden in their bedrooms who
wouldn't know what dynamics were if it swallowed them!

Of course, the original concept of DAB allowed such compression to be
applied locally or not as the circumstances dictated.

To be honest, how many people can afford to go to a decent concert these
days - even the ridiculously loud pop variety - to even find out what
dynamics really are. I know I can't!

True. But we all listen to live speech, and the way that's handled by some
of the 'talk' stations hurts my brain...
