Hello All

I am looking for a bit of help....I recently bought a Sony MCH 6700 2nd hand
off a friend...its exactly the same as
this model on eBay

I was told the device was a few years old and that it hadn't been used for a
while. Anyway when I got the HiFi it worked
a treat and has done for 3 weeks until yesterday. I was playing one of many
of my CD-R compilation cd and the unit started
skipping. When I took the CD out and re-insterted it...the screen just read
'no-disc' I tried 4 or 5 CD-R's and CD's all with no
luck. I then tried another CD-R and it worked! It just played the first
track though

Now my question is....'is the device broken?' When you insert a CD you hear
it spinning up but it doesn't seem to scan for tracks
properly. So before I go shouting at a friend what can I do? Do you think it
just needs a good CD lens cleaner?

I have a big subwoofer besides the hi-fi...may this have caused damage?

Just as a note...the HiFi itself still works fine(radio,tape,etc)

Have you tried it with original CD's not CD-R's? Your post only talks
about CD-Rs and that may be the cause of your problems. Let us know
what you find.

This is usually diagnosed as a failing laser that needs replacement. It can
sometimes just be that the transport mechanism has dried out and
disassembly, oiling with a light oil (sewing machine) and putting back
together can fix the problem. For Transport details see
http://members.lycos.co.uk/hanalogue/
This should let you know what transport is in your player and how to buy a
new one. Do not attempt if you have no DIY/electronics skills but not a
tough job

A friend of mine suggested that the Laser maybe knackered....I tried a CD
Lense cleaner...but of what use is it if I cant read the disc!!

Looking at that link I found the following details

Do you reckon this is a job I could undertake myself? I am used to open up
pc and the like but have never delved into my hi-fi.

What if this isn't the problem though(the drying up of oil?) How much would
a new laser set me back if I took it into a shop? or if I just ordered the
part and had a bash @ it myself?

Changing the CD transport is no more difficult in most players than swapping
a hard drive or a graphics card. Just unbolt, unplug replace and then
reattach cables and re bolt down.

The transport for my player was a CDM4 and cost about £30

I thought that servos and stuff needed to be set up. Obviously not an issue if
the transport *plus electronics* is replaced as a unit.
