Sony HiMD - another marketing disaster?

My present car came with cassette and CD, but no Minidisc option -
long after I'd replaced cassette with Minidisc at home.
I take it that CD-Rs are hard to find or expensive in the UK?
No they are dirt cheap, but really, do you find CD an acceptable car
format? They are large (at least full size ones are), they are naked
and therefore get scratched very easily, and they are impossible to
remove from a case, and insert single handed. Now of course CDs are
great if you have them permanently mounted in a changer, but for slot-in
use; well they are a bit 20th century aren't they?
I would be perfectly happy to use solid-state removable memory to carry
audio for in-car use, but CF is still too expensive, and the pins on the
connector can too easily get damaged. I'm sure replaceable media using
SS memory will become available in a format to suit automotive use, but
I honestly don't believe we have it yet.
(And the joke iPOD is just an item for fashion victims).

Why a joke? Seems like the perfect in-car source to me.

It's a joke full stop. It has the same problem as MD in that it uses a
proprietary coding, and it does not have removable media. The battery
life is laughable, and there are already reports of failed hard disks.
To have to take the whole unit to your PC to add tracks is a joke.
The whole thing is a triumph of marketing over fitness-for-use.

Horses for courses I guess. I use an iPod + iTrip for in car music and find
it the perfect solution. With a car charger, battery life is simply
irrelevant. With a bit more effort I could easily add a proper plumbed in
car kit then the iPod just slots in and out as easily as a mobile phone and
there's no need for the iTrip.
Of course it has to be connected to a computer to add tracks but that's like
saying a CD-R or cassette has to be 'connected' to a CD drive/tape deck to
add tracks. Given that we're talking about an in-car source, there'll always
be the need to add tracks to the storage medium before taking them out to
the car.
Methinks you're just suffering from iPod-envy ;-)
No I'll just wait until PDAs give me reasonably-priced 512Meg removable
memory, 256kbps MP3 record/playback, moving-map high-resolution GPS, and
a multi-band mobile phone, then the iPod will be laughed out of court.
(I already have the hi-res GPS using the Holux GPS 'mouse' receiver into
an iPAQ5550, and the rest won't be too far away)

Like I say, horses for courses, I just want a nicely designed, well built
music machine that links wirelessly to the car audio and plays several
thousand 320kpbs MP3s (256 nowhere near good enough ;-) ). The iPod does
all of that
PDAs always seem a bit too geeky/techie to me; wouldn't want to be seen
using one!
