Anyone dealt with quad servicing?
I was not terribly impressed by them.
I am coming to the view that it is almost always better to buy well reviewed, and carefully personally auditioned, modestly-priced non-British equipment, and to chuck it when it fails, than to pay the large premium for top name equipment which involves such an investment that upon failure servicing is the only possible economically viable solution. The difference in sound is minimal at most. The best ever service dept. I have dealt with is Yamaha (UK), and there is certainly nothing cheap sounding about most TEAC, Sony, NAD equipment. JB |

JB Well do beg to differ there. I've had my ESL63's since 1981 and they've been back say three/four times for repairs and upgrades, and in each case I've been quoted on the price and the repairs have been done very quickly, but then again I'm only some 30 mins away by car. As to amps etc no real experience, just bought some spares which were reasonably priced, and had lots of good advice free of charge over the years. Sorry but I'm starting to think by cheap and throwaway isn't a good idea anymore ,unless we really want more and more landfill tips:( So a pair of speakers that have been in service for 22 years and are still every bit as good as they were when built, and still have years of life left yet isn't to my mind a bad investment. Mind you the Spendor BC1's I have are now some 34 years young and are still fine and wind and limb:) Not to mention a couple of old 33/303 units.... -- Tony Sayer |

I'll never buy *anything* from them again. -- *If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

Well, now that Concord is no more, I'm rather further than 30 mins from Quad. However I was quite happy with their service when I had my 67 repaired a few years ago. I also contacted them about the faint noises one of ESL63's now make, and they gave me a very sensible dialogue as we discussed if any actual service was required. So a pair of speakers that have been in service for 22 years and are still every bit as good as they were when built, and still have years of life left yet isn't to my mind a bad investment. Agreed. In fact, I also bought a pair of 988's a while ago simply on the basis of wanting a new pair of speakers similar to my 63's. Very pleased with both the old speakers and the new ones. Not to mention a couple of old 33/303 units.... Can't comment on what you haven't mentioned. :-) My only real complaint about Quad service is that they have become much more reluctant than in the past to provide technical manuals or circuit diagrams. However it looks like that this may simply be that their own documentation is less comprehensive than used to be the case. I managed to get a copy of the 988 diagrams a while ago, and they are much less well drawn than previous generations of diagrams.
