sorry if this caused any confusion.

Anyway ... I know people who buy cars based on features and they don't
test drive them first (new cars anyway, you might be able to do a test
drive on a 2nd hand model). If you are buying an ex-govt or fleet car
at an auction, I doubt you would be able to do a test drive as well.

In excess of 70% of BMW 7-series buyers don't test drive a car before
placing an order

Last time I looked, there were a lot more Astra models than there were
NADs....................

Perhaps you don't understand the meaning of 'stock' as applied to cars?

:-) The 70% figure comes from BMW's own research

A stock car is something entirely different! OTOH, my local Vauxhall
dealer has about ten different Astras in stock - how about your local
NAD dealer?

As regards racing, perhaps. In normal car speak in the UK it is used to
indicate a 'base' or 'poverty' model, although it's not much used these
days. And that's obviously what I took the OP to mean by it.

You're interested in the stock of Astras at your local dealer? Wierd...

That's usually referred to as the 'base' model. In all (?) the dealerships
I worked in, 'stock' referred to the vehicles we had 'in stock' or 'on the
board' at that moment.

In the US, 'stock' refers to an unmodified car

********, I've been buying cars for forty years and I've *never* heard
*anyone* refer to a base model as a 'stock' model.

ditto (had about or just over a 100 different ones myself now...)

neither have I - 'base' or 'basic' model only...

In the UK a 'stock car' is one made for racing - similar to (but probably
not the same as) 'banger racing'.

I ground Barry Ansell's valves in for him when I was a schoolkid (so that's
pre 1964, when I left/escaped) and he went on to become World Champion that
year and a friend of mine had is arm ripped off at the shoulder, stock car
racing....

(End of 'stock car' anecdotes and *all* interest in the subject.....)
