Bit of a beginner question....

I've been looking for one of those 'under cupboard' CD-radio units for ages
and just can't find one for sale in the UK. I thought the other day that it might
be possible to fit a car CD player to the underside of a kitchen cupboard and
place some speakers but I don't know if this is sensible.

Any opinions? Do they require a separate amp or can I just wire them directly
to speakers?

You can run speakers direct off a head unit , but be aware that car stereos
need a pretty high current DC supply which will be a significant increase in
cost. Also car speakers sound best when they have a sealed enclosure behind
them so unless you were planning on sealing up one of your cupboards then
there are other problems.

I'd seriously consider buying a cheap little micro system with speakers on
leads that can be placed anywhere while the stereo is out of sight.

Under cupboard cd players also suffer badly from steam and grease from
cooking giving them a good coating resulting in clogged up mechanism and
dirty lenses very quickly
