Actually that seller has abandoned selling the MC-10K and now prefers to sell the MC-10L, which uses EL34 valves. I might be wrong, but 50W into 6 ohms seems a lot to pull out of a pair of EL34s - that's getting into gutar amp territory, and there's no way a guitar amp will stay clean at that kind of o/p (more like a veritable arse-kicking unless you're very gentle on the strings). By contrast, my EL34 hifi jobbie is rated at 20W. -- Wally www.artbywally.com www.wally.myby.co.uk |

I am thinking of having one of these impotred off e-bay would you recommend it? Is this model a push pull amp or class a? Cheers I would recommend it as being a **** of a lot of amp for the money, but only IF you are a little au fait with electronics. I had a set of cathode resistors blow up. I soldered in the new ones properly this evening and it's fine again now. Not rocket science if I can manage it without help. Actually that seller has abandoned selling the MC-10K and now prefers to sell the MC-10L, which uses EL34 valves. I think both are probably great value for money if you want a damn good value-for-money entry-level valve amp. The seller ("Hi-Ends") I bought from, has been very supportive, and co-operative, even when I told him the 3 cathode resistors associated with one of the output valves had blown up. Today I received TWO replacement output valves and a bunch of resistors (3) to replace the broken ones. Martin -- M.A.Poyser Tel.: 07967 110890 Manchester, U.K. http://www.fleetie.demon.co.uk |

Maybe you're right; not sure what distortion that amp's rated at at that power, if indeed it does manage to output that much. Well, it doesn't quote the output as RMS, but a pair of push-pull EL34s can put out 50W, so it is feasible that its designed to deliver that much. There's also a distortion figure of 0.5%, but it doesn't say what o/p power that applies to. :-) Another thing I was thinking about was the rating of the PSU - 300W consumption to power two 50W amps. My 50W guitar amp consumes (IIRC) 180W - and has a valve count of 4 double triodes (mostly ECC83) and two EL34. I don't know how many little-valve heaters the MC-10L has to supply, but my non-expert feeling is that the PSU is a tad underpowered. Overall, I get the feeling that the amp will have headroom, but might not sound too great if it has to use it. -- Wally www.artbywally.com www.wally.myby.co.uk |

Did you have to pay imort duty on it coming in and if you dont mind me
asking how much was it in total. The other option I am looking at is a secondhand Naim pre/power combo - but I am very tempted by a valve amp. "Fleetie" wrote in message ... In case anyone is interested, I've just put these up. They show the insides of the amp. http://www.fleetie.demon.co.uk/yaqin.html Please don't visit more than once or twice each; I don't want my bandwidth allocation eaten up. Thanks. Martin |

Wel, can't speak much about the MC-10L (EL34), but assuming it has the same size mains xformer as my MC-10K, well, it looks like a pretty huge xformer to me. I was surprised when I took the can off it and found it literally filled the inside of the can snugly. It's a toroidal whose diameter is exactly the same as that of a CD, and whose height is about 1cm more than the diameter of a CD. I know valve amps are inefficient, but I'd have thought something that size ought to be good for 2x50W without too much trouble. sounds cheap to me - I've just bought a pair of B&W CDM1 SE's so could do
with an amp upgrade for them "Fleetie" wrote in message ... "StaffBull" wrote Did you have to pay imort duty on it coming in and if you dont mind me asking how much was it in total.
