Ok, make that an X-5 ;-)
Blech, just can't stand anything with the taint of Bangle about it!
Besides, I live up a lane, and nobody would let me out if I drove a
Beemer. No problem with either of the Audis!
whats the problem with lanes and Beemers?

Most 3-series drivers are aggressive assholes, hence people carve them
up at every opportunity. As a result, if you are sitting in almost any
Beemer at the end of a lane waiting to turn right onto the main road
in rush hour, no one is going to let you out. OTOH, I am an aggressive
hooligan who drives an Audi, and I never have to wait more than two or
three cars to be waved out.

Most 3-series drivers are aggressive assholes,
oooh ... that is a very sweeping statement. Or is it because it is
usually yuppies who drive them? "Look at me, I have just taken another
step up the corporate ladder".
What about people driving the new 1-series then?
hence people carve them up at every opportunity.

Vorsprung Durch Technik, eh?
Getting OT here (as always!), I have noticed that Orientals tend to
flash their wealth about ... so anyone in a Beemer doesn't get lip, but
in a way are almost respected. Though Mercedes Benzes are more popular
among the Chinese than Beemers ...
Though in Oz, the term "******" tends to be used for people who drive
Beemers (or maybe even European cars in general!)

Perhaps that's what makes them so aggressive? And I don't have a
3 Series. ;-)

They must still be a rarity in your part of the world. In London they're
so common that they're just another car. 4X4s are treated as the new
BMW...

Most definitely not - a Series 3 BMW (once common as muck, now disappearing
hearabouts) is no 'status symbol' these days in the UK!
I took a (no longer young but smart) 316 on 3-spoke alloys in lieu of a
refund a year or 3 ago and felt such a tit driving it that I gave it to my
youngest son. He kept it for at least 3 months before swapping for a Vauhall
estate (Astra?). My current car (very 'ordinaire' but a bit of a 'loup dans
l'habillement de mouton' ;-) would eat it (and most other Teutonic
****maschinen) in all respects: speed, acceleration, braking, handling,
ride, and comfort....
Which makes me realise, interestingly, I have never given a thought about
replacing it whic is probably just as well because I don't really have the
funds atm! - I grabbed it off my brother when he was going to p/x it for
chump change. It was mint then (not quite so mint now! :-) and had had a
very easy life, wot with him being an engineer an' all! For instance, I
recently did St Neots to Dundee in 6 hours and 1 minute (overnight) - that's
a steady 4,000rpm/90mph *all* the way with one quick stop for gas and 6.5
hours back the next night, fully laden (to the roof) with bits and bob's
including a stone birdbath! (Only took the extra half hour as I tried, in
vain, to keep it down to 70 and gave up by the time we had reached
Edinburgh!!
(Pinky thinks I drive a Rover!! - See 'Ronin' Ch.14 for a clue, albeit of an
earlier incarnation.... ;-)
what happened to the polite, reserved British nature?
That'd be *English* not 'British' - there's a big difference!!

In the UK, that terms covers pretty much *every other* road user..... :-)

You're getting the idea! I did say most, not all. There's a 62-year
old farmer in our village who has a 330i coupe which he drives in a
courteous manner, but he's not yer average 3-series driver!
What about people driving the new 1-series then?
Bizarre? Don't understand packaging? Desperate to own a Beemer? :-)

Road rage...............

Indeed. ASR, ESP, ABS, 5-valve, quad cam, quattro............

Shouldn't that be people who drive the Mazda RX-8? :-)

No, I'm not.

Damn, Beemers must be cheaper over in Europe than in Oz! Over here, a 3 series
is still a status symbol!

a 316 would be quite underpowered, wouldn't it? I have driven a Holden Astra
(Opel Astra in Europe?). Thank goodness it was an auto, I'm used to the Japanese
style gearbox style. It took me a while to get used to the instruments in the
Astra (had to read the damn manual!) and the reversed positions of the
windscreen wiper switch and indicators!
My current car (very 'ordinaire' but a bit of a 'loup dans

Ah, Rovers get the stigma of public school rugby types and rich stay at home
mums here ... (or that could be my imagination working overtime)

Ah, so the stereotypes would be ...
Polite, reserved English
Fiery Scots/Welsh?

farmer .. village ... I guess the 330i would be his weekend car, I get the
impression you need a 4WD on a farm!

I don't think they look that bad. They have just be launched in Oz.
