I don't know what all the fuss about valves/ss is about - where did it get
written that it must be one *or* the other? (Some **** trying to establish
House Rules or summat??) I've got a 50/50 split here (valves and ss) and
use
them them according to the suitability of the required purpose. (Is that
too
simple?)
Aside from when you *want* to alter the input signal, just exactly
when are valves *ever* suitable for the purpose?
Just about whenever I don't need to stack anything on top of the amp....

Believe me, you don't want to know.
What do you mean? I listen to them to calm down when Emma Kirkby gets
a bit too radical.

Why the frell anyone would make a valved unit in the 21st century is

They tend to sound bloody lovely, isn't that good enough?
Er, sorry Peter "bloody lovely" isn't good enough and won't cut it, here
in
ukra where pseudoscience is king.
I thought that was the now moribund ukra.vinyl.......
What do you mean - a thousand different ways to ask 'what is the best way
to
clean records?'...??? :-)
(ukrav's done its job - given you and one or two others a serious scare
Yeah riiiiight, whatever you and your psychiatrist think is most
helpful for you, Keith.
Don't know about 'my psychiatrist' but I reckon a biggie on the Lotto would
go a long way towards it...... :-)
(Must buy a ticket sometime!)
and
significantly trimmed the rabid 'anti-vinyl' content in this group....)
That's because everyone's pretty much given up on vinyl
They have? That's news to me - Shiny Nigel's back into it (after hearing
*only* my vinyl kit for the last couple of years - says summat, don't it?)
and he now only gets new CDs by buying Sunday papers with freebies in them,
apparently......
- hence the
morbidity of ukra.vinyl...........
So? You didn't notice the morbidity of this group a week or two back?
Try to confine your remarks to meaningful,
scientific terms like 'Rosy Glow' or 'Rose Tinted'.......
A useful abbreviation of 'excessive even-order harmonic distortion
with a significant degree of microphonic reverberation and rolled-off
treble', dontcha think? :-)
No, I think it's a useful abbreviation of 'I've got such a bug up my arse
about something I don't *understand* (or like) that I've got to call it
silly names...'
That's the difference - I *do* understand it, and I *don't* like it.
Why is that a problem for *you*?
It's not - I couldn't care less whether you like vinyl or not. You're the
one who can't leave it alone.
It's not a 'silly name',
Yes it is.
it's a
reasonably good description of what that classic 'valve sound' does to
*all* your music, regardless of what the recording *really* sounds
like.
No it's not.
I used to call it 'the B&O effect', but hardly anyone has B&O
these days. If you prefer a pure vinyl analogy, it's a Music For
Pleasure LP compared to a Sheffield direct-cut........
Another stupid, pointless/meaningless and unnecessary 'comparison' - where
does your schoolboy 'only the very best will do' philosophy end up? There's
just the one player and the one amp on the one pair of speakers playing only
the one disk in the world and everything else is noticeably inferior and not
worth bothering with? (Don't tell me - your 'arc welder and two ironing
boards' playing those 'special' CDs you've got come 'closest to it' and the
rest of us are just ****ing in the breeze.....???)
So bleak......

Can be? So what's the relevance of that to any amp which doesn't distort
that much? Rest easy, matey - I (and probably no-one else) listens to any
amp that distorts *audibly* enough to be noticed, or to be a 'problem' in
any way....
Oops, insert a 'never' where it best suits you.....

Valve microphones in that common use? Don't believe it.
There are a whole host of cheap Chinese valve mics sold to the home
studio market. Check out manufacturers like Rode or Studio Electronics -
even Neumann have re-issued some of their old valve models.
Cheers.

Indeed. However, I was referring to the pro side. Where consistency
matters.

Yes they have, but they're hardly in common use.
