My only recollection of the IEE is that the main concern on their
application forms, etc, was how many people were under my management.

sounds like the engineering institute here, which is dominated by civil
engineers (my impression anyway), and they are more concerned with
project management, pen pushing, etc than actual technical
design/implementation

I joined the IEEE instead. :-)

as all good EE people do. Well, those that don't do the traditional
power engineering work like signal processing, electronics, multi-media,
networking, computing, etc

Which is really strange as years ago there used to be a separate Institiute
of Radio and Electronic Engineering which for some reaso got swallowed up
by the IEE IIRC.

low-status compared to civil and power electrical engineering?

You find that surprising??

I do now!

From memory, most "engineers wanted" ads in the papers are for civil,
process control, industrial and power engineers.

Electronics engineers? Don't recall seeing ads for them (but I do
remember reading articles about EE people getting laid off!)
And definitely no "precision analogue electronics engineers" wanted ads ...

Interestingly, this is about the only country in the world where
unqualified people are *allowed* to call themselves engineers.
Elsewhere, you *have* to be a member of the appropriate professional
body before you can use that title. A bit like Chartered Engineer in
the UK.

You have to be licensed in Texas to use the title "Engineer" (at least
publicly)
