Default Twinkling numbers???

My bloody newsreader (OE) briefly displays a high number of 'new posts' and
instantly drops back to a lower number on a routine basis. Just now it said
'16' before dropping down to '9' in a flash. Does anyone else get this?
(I've got no-one 'binned' atm!)

Is this just the crappy software or does anybody think I'm losing posts?

(Apologies if anyone feels themselves 'ignored' as a result!)

Mozilla does it as well - not all the time though.
I don't think I've missed any posts due to this.

Only time I saw a missing post in t-bird is when the server fouled up.
It seems fairly stable here. theres a bug in threading that I've never
actually seen manifest itself, but its otherwise handling nearly a
quater of a million emails with great ease... (I know the email and nntp
bits arent entirely the same code, but the quality overall seems good)

I use Agent and it momentarily displays how many messages might be
downloaded before filtering those already read. Perhaps that's what
you are seeing.

I use Mozilla's news reader, and I had a problem like that a while back
on another newsgroup. The number new posts would show an increase, and
when I downloaded the headers, the number of new posts was less by a
fixed offset.

This went away after a month or so.

No, you may be reading two newsgroups with that share a lot of crossposts.
In that case OE sees a lot of new posts, but after downloading them and
reconciling them with posts you've already read, the crossposts are dropped
from the count.

No, the *only* newsgroup I am subscribed to is this one, but thanks for that
and to all who responded.....
