I have a set of Wharfedale speakers, but I have never seen any
referance to them. They were bought about 1984, and are bookshelf
size (large bookshelf) three way speaker design with an interesting
assembly. All the components are mounted on a moulded front piece
with nothing but the wire attchment points in the back connected to
the box. The entire speaker front portion can be removed. They are
called a CD50-2. Are these any good as speakers? If so does
Wharfedale still manufacture them in this manner? It seemed to me to
be a very effective way to mass produce a repeatable design. I have
never seen on the web any referance to these speakers (possibly they
are/were so bad they (Wharfedale) might want to disavow any
connection......)
I seem to remember thet they were only available for a couple of
years.....

I think you'll find that these are the 'commercial' equivalents of the
Delta
30 and were used in bars etc. Likewise they did a 'commercial' version of
the Diamond, even one with an amp inside it as well!

When I looked at a few (two) referances to Delta 30 Wharfedale speakers, I
saw in one referance that it was a two way speaker, whereas these CD50-2 are
three way speakers. They have a tweeter, a midrange of about 4 inch, and a
6-7 inch bass speaker. They sound rather nice, but I don't have much
experience with anything else. I drive them with a Luxman LV100 amp, Luxman
T100 Tuner, and a Pioneer 6 pack CD player, all bought at the same time.
Currently one channel in the amp is not working, although the preamp does
work with both channels. I hope to have it fixed one day when a friendly
audiophile drops by....;-)
I do have a simple question though.... Has the hifi market changed
dramatically enough for me to toss these older pieces out and buy new? Or
should I keep these older mid 80's stuff and fix them? I really don't think
I need a 5.1 type system, as I live in a small flat, and have only need for
stereo.... When I bought these, the salesman at the time told me that
Luxman was a good brand, and that they should last me a long time (I might
have misinterpreted that as a lifetime.) But that is the words of a
salesman, and perhaps not a reflection of the whole market but rather only
of the world he lived in.
Thanks for any replies.....
