BTW I'm still open minded about the possibility that vinyl and valves
have as-yet undiscovered attributes which distinguish them as superior
to digital and SS in some regard, although this is not what *current*
scientific knowledge tells us.

Designer Lynn Olsen makes a case for valves along these lines

Interesting study in self-contradiction:

"Direct-heated triodes have one-half to one-third the distortion of
triode-connected pentodes, and this is immediately audible as clarity,
realism, and a "you-are-there" quality. Pentodes, although not my favorite
device, are better than transistors, which have even higher distortion as
well as complex nonlinear problems with capacitance. Modern transformers,
which are heavy, expensive, and measure poorly in the bass, sound better
than any capacitor! It's a strange world. "

In this paragraph the author establishes low distortion as an important
criteria for judging amplifier, but in this paragraph he essentially says
the opposite:

"Many of the new amps were pretty bad, especially high-end transistor amps."
