Tangent system from Currys
I think it depends on how much you are spending as regards the importance of
names. A cheap Technics/Denon etc is not much better than a Cheap budget brand (of which there are many) Remember that you get nothing for nothing in this world, and if a system is offering a lot for a small price then something (normally build quality etc) will be compromised...... The best thing to do is go and listen to these systems, take some of your own music CD's etc along If you want cheap gear then somewhere like richer sounds could be a place to start, it may seem like a pain the bum but if you put some time in and listen and perhaps assemble a separates system you could end up with something reasonable I hope this helps Gary "AberTech" wrote in message ... How important is the name when buying audio products? As in manufacturers name vs product specs? |

I bought a Panasonic mini system years ago, about £200 with speakers. I listened to several up to £400 in Currys - my criteria was a line input for the computer; sound quality; cd; radio; cassette; smallish. The Panasonic sounded streets ahead of the rest - even though its 'ratings' (lowish 10W power) looked poor. This may be difficult for you with the floorstanding speaker preference - I really don't think you're going to get very good speakers of this type for your budget, best to get the tiddly Missions IMO. I presume Dual have fallen on hard times since the days when they made decent turntables? Has the name been sold on to someone else? |

Browsing around Comet last month there was a Philips Micro system at around £150 which sounded surprisingly good. I was thinking of the Mission M73I floorstander speakers paired with the Cambridge Audio A5 amp and CD34 cd player? |

If you're willing to forgo the convenience of an all-in-one box that setup might well do you. Have a look at: http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews408.html for some reviews of the M73 - pretty mixed and plenty of 'light bass' comments. I've only owned the very old Cambridge stuff, but read consistently good things about the newer RS range. Noisy transformers is about the worst I've come across. Visit a RS during a quiet moment and try different speakers - i have a feeling you'll prefer bookshelf for that money (don't be too put off by 'minor names' - I went through all of this with a friend about a year ago and he preferred some 'Eltax' speakers; even I was impressed!), but in any event you're not likely to go far wrong. I agree with you Anthony
The Denon is substancially better than any other cheap budget system I have heard, and if you must have a midi system it beats anything at twice the price. imo it mush better than the simular technic's offering. chris "Anthony Edwards" wrote in message ... How important is the name when buying audio products? As in manufacturers name vs product specs? It may or may not be important. More to the point. Curry's have no tradition of nor expertise in selling audio. They are simply box shifters. As another poster mentioned - try Richer Sounds - you can get some half-decent stuff there for a snip price.
