Default Tangent system from Currys

Anyone have experience of Tangent systems? I'm looking for seperates rather
than a hi-fi system and for £299 this looks tempting. It would also save me
the hassle of trying to 'pick 'n mix' components.
Would like to hear your feedback on this.

Looks to be a lot for your money. I've no experience of these particular
units - apparently (from reviews) the Denon mini systems are about the
best at this sort of thing - the Denon DM31S came out best in a recent
Which? micro system test.

And a lot may depend on the speakers - cheaper Mission speakers tend to
be quite good. Take a look at Richer Sounds.

The Mission M71 standmount speakers were bloody amazing for £130 three or
four years ago, now for £60 from RS they are a steal. I just hope that they
are in stock. A problem I have often found with RS is that their tastiest
bargains are often out of stock, "Would you like to look at this better one
instead sir ...".

Both sets of Tangent speakers *look* as though they would
sound horrible.

I've thought about:

1. the Denon DM31 at £180 plus some floorstander speakers.

2. Richer sounds package of Cambridge AUDIO CD34 CD Player + Cambridge
Audio A5 Amplifier + Mission M71i speakers at £249. Maybe buying a
receiver later. Those M71's aren't floorstanders though which is what I'm
really after.. I wonder if RS would let me upgrade the speakers...

3. An 'all-in-one' package like the Tangent but still seperates rather than
something like a mini hi-fi.

Mcdonalds do with producing real food.

Ok, but...may I ask why? Is it the Denon itself (supposed to have good
reviews) or the speaker type?

Yes

I guess I am edging towards this myself.

I take it Tangent don't have a good name then? Or are a 'no-name' when it
comes to audio....

First time round - about 30 years ago - Tangent had a very good name.
The company was set up by a chap who's name was - I think - Greenwood,
and who was by profession an opera singer. They were based near
Cambridge, finally at Bar Hill.

My father-in-law still has a pair of their TM1 floorstanders on which
he plays mainly classical organ music. Very nice they are too.

Ok. Thanks for your feedback.

How important is the name when buying audio products? As in manufacturers
name vs product specs?
