Can't think of a display much *less* conspicuous than speaker cables,
especially if they're under the carpet.

Some speaker companies use speaker cable inside their speakers

The Tannoy Kingdom range and the Turnberrys I have, from the Prestige range are wired inside with Van den hul
speaker cable

Also a few companies use Kimber 8TC inside speakers.

You're own miniature National Grid system right there in your sitting room.
Just add some tiny tractors, farmers etc. for that really realistic effect

Don't know which "Naim cable" you may mean. One Naim-branded cable I recall
has a high inductance/meter. Hence if you use more than a short length of
this it may well change the HF response of the system. However if you use a
Naim amp. you may well have to do this.

I also bypassed the internal fuses

Bypassing the fuses might reduce LF distortion and dynamic compression a
bit.

and added a few links and cut a couple of tracks on the crossover PCB so
that there was a common ground point.
The result was a cleaner, more 3-D sound, well worth the effort, and I
haven't heard anything affordable that comes close so I still use them.

OK. Fairy snuff. :-)

Yes. Just use the Peter Walker 5% rule.:
Cable resistance should be less than 5% of the speaker's impedance.

I did not know this, thanks, I'll check my cables. They are not actually
lamp flex but neither are they very expensive I think I paid about 50p a
metre for the stuff.

The 5% of the speaker's nominal impedance is the loop of the cable, so
disconnect it entirely, short one end, and measure between the other end.

This would be about 0.4 ohm for most 8 ohm speakers, or 0.3 ohm for 6 ohm.
A cheap DVM might not be very accurate with such a small resistance.

In practice in a domestic environment 1mm cable will better this. Maplin
do a decent speaker cable for well under a quid a metre which is 2.5mm and
will cover most setups.

I bet they don't use thick cable in the actual coils of the speakers
though.
