Default Arcam 8SE Replacement

Well, my trusty 7 year old Arcam 8SE has just decided to give up the
ghost. The local dealer have called Arcam who say it will probably need
a new laser. Cost £200 quid.

Don't have quite the same budget as wehn I bought the 8SE. What do
people reckon? Pay the 200 quid? Or will I get something as good for
200-300 quid these days?

Thanks

Toby

Get yourself a new player that will handle CD, DVD, MP3 - the lot.
There really isn't any point in fixing this.

Toby,
Well if you do buy a new player, which I would certainly do, put the broken
one on eBay with a honest description as to what is wrong. Someone will
probably buy it!
I sold a ARCAM DAB tuner that needed a new tuner head without any trouble at
all.
Frankly unless you are a gold cable listener you are spoilt for choice for
reasonably-priced CD players these days. Marantz/Sony/etc.etc.etc.
Good luck
JB

Buying a new laser should not be this expensive, it is probably only about
£30 the rest is fitting. Could you identify it and fit it yourself ?

Thanks for the advice.

I think the dealer is being fair - they seemed surprised by the cost as
well. What they have suggested - and what I've agreed to - is they'll
send it away to Arcam with a note to say that if repair is more than
100 GBP, Arcam are to call me before proceeding.

Well, I went with the repair. After inspection the cost came to £95 +
VAT. Got it home at the weekend and it's as good as new.

Miles better than any CD player I could have got for the money.
