Ah....

I would have agreed with you up 'til this morning or perhaps have argued
that R2 is so 'in yer face' it also appears to sound OK(ish)....??

But, having had 'Prime Time' on all morning with stuff like 'There's a
pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.' (whatever it's properly
called) and 'Put another nickel in' (my little Nickelodeon) coming at me
like top quality AM from way back (when life was good), I'm prepared to
widen my 'angle of acceptability' a tad.

The *fun* element has skated right over any concerns about quality and it
has been a blast - perfect background music for dilling around, avoiding
doing anything *actually* useful....!! :-)

Freeview and satellite match this, but allow higher bit
rates on the other services. The DAB portable is, well just that, a
portable with small speakers because there isn't much to hide!(..

FWIW, the one I've got sounds perfectly fine as a 'little trannie' in a
'little trannie' sort of way. It's not as 'tinny' as a lot of 'tinny
trannies' I've heard in my time!! :-)

(Academic to me though - I've got it going through my system, using the Line
Out which is how I will use it mostly....)

Mind you, if you really want more very high quality audio a digital
satellite receiver, NOT a Sky digibox, with a dual LNB can be had for
less than that sort of money. Enjoy the delights of France Musique,
Bayern4 Klassick, Concertzender, NDR kulture, hr Klassick and not to
mention Paris Jazz, Swiss Jazz and Berlin Jazz, they even have outside
broadcasts from the Marriot hotel on the Potsdamer Platz!. When's the
last time the English Smooth/Jazz FM did that?.

Thats real radio, and that Orgelkonzert the other week from Bayern as
good as a CD where the missing bits from linear PCM to 256 K were more
than made up with the German engineering standards..

Absolutely stunning)

Sounds all very temptatious but when would anyone get the bloody time to
listen to it??

****es all over UK T-DAB...

Why, even our Keith could get a dish hidden out in his yard somewhere

I won't rule it out. Whilst I'm not *happy* about it - this little DABchick
is such a sweetie (couple of obscure puns in there for the thickies...) and
so damned handy I think I'm about to drop me kecks and grease up for
'digital radio' generally....

I see it being rather like the digital camera I've got - I don't think it is
as good (deep down) as a decent 'film camera' other than it's as handy as a
Swiss Army knife and in the couple of years I've had it, I appear to have
taken.....

Can't be right, but check the 'filenames' of these, my first and last shots

????

(I don't believe it myself!!)

A final point - when one has a lot of valve gear and turntables 'flat
surfaces' are at a premium and 'stacking' is out of the question. A 'tuner'
isn't much use to me and I wouldn't now want to be without the 'portability'
of the little radio I've got. Anyone wanting to get into DAB would, I think,
be well advised to consider something similar rather than dropping an
unnecessarily large amount of money on a so-called 'audiophile' slice of
'hifi' kit. I've had the Technics DAB tuner (on and off) and I don't think
there's really any difference. (How could there be - it's 'digital'...!!!)

Don't think even they can enforce that interpretation if you don't have a
TV set.

This particular year I have been forced to "wait 'till the bitter end"
before getting my licence. The final(?) letter from them says: "If you are
continuing to watch or record television programme services and you are no
longer covered by a valid licence, you are breaking the law.". The
licence now has the phrase "to install or use" on it. Now, this is
different from what I am used to. It used to be that the licence was for
posession of tv receiving equipment - whether it was installed or used or
not. I don't know when this changed, but it appears to me that if you have
a TV only used for watching DVDs and playing games - with no aerial
connection (i.e. not installed) and no means of receiving a proper signal
from external equipment - then you don't need a licence.

Remember that the bit rates of the radio stations on Freeview,
digital satellite and cable are higher than on DAB, so the audio
quality is also higher than on DAB.

For archiving digital radio the best thing you can get is a Freeview
or digital satellite PC card, because they stream the received MPEG
bitstream directly to your hard drive.

I'd like to get the increased number of radio channels broadcast by
DAB (although I fear that they'll just be more dumbed-down BBC
drivel) but what I've heard of it so far doesn't make me want to pay
much for the privilege! I've only heard three DAB tuners, but in all
of them the audio quality is poorer than FM. (Except on R3, and it
would be useful to get a SPDIF feed to my minidisc to record Late
Junction, so perhaps a DAB tuner would be useful for this.)

The bit rates of all the BBC radio stations apart from Radio 3 are
higher on Freeview and digital satellite than on DAB. Radio 3 also has
its bit rate reduced whenever Radio 5 Sports Extra is on-air during the
daytime.

So, if you listen to any other BBC radio station, or listen to Radio 3
in the daytime, then I'd advise you to buy Freeview or digital satellite
rather than DAB.

Other examples that might affect you are the fact that Radio 4 is
reduced to mono on DAB (stereo and permanent higher bit rate on
Freeview) when Radio 5 Sports Extra is on-air in the evening, and BBC7
is permanently mono on DAB (permanently stereo on Freeview).

You can buy a Humax F2FoxT Freeview box which has an LED channel number
display so that you don't need a TV to change channels:

http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/fr...m#humax_f2foxt

This Humax receiver has both a digital optical audio output and phono
analogue outputs.

A Freeview feed might be better, but I'm a Luddite who doesn't have a
television, and if I put an antenna up, Blair's thought police will be
round asking why I don't have a licence to watch the BBC relaying his
party's propaganda streams.

You don't need a TV licence unless you have a TV.

If you don't have a TV, you don't need a licence. The aerial doesn't
matter. However, I think you have to give your address when buying a
Freeview box - so perhaps get a friend to do it for you, because that
address is meant to go to the licensing people.

If you have TV receiving equipment... don't you have to pay the
license fee anyway? I have yet to see a radio only freeview box.

No. I rang them to ask about this, and they said that if you do not
watch TV then you don't need a TV licence.

BTW, Prime Time is 128kbps on DAB and 192kbps on digital satellite,
therefore far better audio quality on digital satellite.

Fair comment Steve, but much of the appeal is the 'portability' atm - I can
move it here and there and 'plug it in' where I want.

(It even worked fine on the passenger seat in my car the other day!!)
