Help wanted - audio engineers
Hello, I have a Naim CD 3.5. I have had it for a number
of years and am very pleased with it, however, due to
an evolving set of requirements I now require a digital co-axial
output which the player does not provide for.
I have approached Naim, they will not modify the player
as "would seriously degrade the sound".
I am looking for suggestions.
I would have a go at modifying myself if I thought
it would be fairly easy (I am an ex electronics engineer).
Thanks for any advice.
Richard.

Buy a modern 'universal' player such as the Pioneer DV-575A. It has
the output you require, and is a much superior machine. Note that
virtually *any* player which has a digital output will give the same
results, as CD transports have been essentially perfect for more than
ten years.

Why do you even bother saying that to a naim owner? He doesn't want
something that's been technically perfect for ten years, he wants
something that makes music.

Does it have any kind of digital output? If it has an optical output then
optical/coaxial convertors are available from places like Studiospares.
Cheers.

If you want something that makes music, isn't that a musical
instrument?
Are you saying that Naim equipment should be compared with say, an
electric guitar?

The average electric guitar amp, possibly.

Do you have any idea how dumb that is?
If it 'makes music', then what *kind* of music does it make? Suppose
you play lots of different kinds of music - which does it play best?
It's *reproduction* equipment - If it ain't neutral, it's broken.

Of course, in all the above, you are assuming that the Naim really
does sound different from any other good CD player - it may not,
despite being a decade out of date.
