If I was really worried or not happy with the sounds I get, I would get
a mono cartridge or wire one of my cartridges for mono, but I don't
feel the need. In fact I do already have a spare cart (with a spherical
stylus) which already sounds very good on mono and which I *could* wire
as mono, but I see little point when the signal can easily be summed in
software, unless that would be in any way appreciably inferior.....???
I'd sum L&R at the pre-amp. Analogue is very unlikely to have timing
problems. Digital, however, is full of them.
Summing at the preamp was the option we talked about first.
It does seem the best solution. However, most pre-amps these days
don't seem to have a mono switch.
Most audio software can sum the channels after transfer, which Keith
can do with SoundForge. A dedicated mono cartridge (not expensive)
is probably the best option.
