Are you saying that you want a roll-off in HF for off-axis signals when

Depends on the application. Often when using hypercardioids,
one wants attenatuation across the audio band for instruments
that are not close and directly on axis. In multitrack jazz and pop
recordings, good separation is the crucial. Leakage can be a great
problem if not properly controlled.

But surely it must be better if the leaking signal has the right tonal
balance so it mixes cleanly. A microphone with considerable off-axis
unflatness sounds just horrible in leaky mode. Not only that, but
particularly if you are making a stereo recording, the result will be
lousy imaging, with instruments smeared across the stage.
