Default Speaker recommendation

Hello. Sorry I am a complete audio newbie in need of help.

I want to find a pair of wall-mounted (not "in-wall") speakers that I
can put in the living room and the kitchen.

In the living room, the speakers will be used for music listening and
perhaps for home cinema. The listener will be sitting down.

In the kitchen, the music will just be background as I prepare the
dinner.

The reason I want them wall-mounted is to keep them out of the way of
the kids. I understand that acoustically this isn't ideal but I'll live
with the compromise.

Budget is £100-£200 per pair of speakers. Can anybody make a
recommendation please for this price bracket? (I haven't bought the
amplifiers yet.)

What is the optimum height to mount these speakers?

Thanks, guys.

I did this years ago, for the same reason, relegating my hi-fi floorstanding
speakers to the garage. I got some small speakers, and mounted them above
door height using those plastic blocks used for cheap furniture.

If I were doing it again, I think I'd go to the local recycling centre and
see what I could get for £10; (I have a pair of Aiwa three-way speakers
that way that I use on one computer with an old amplifier ... the speakers
are great for the price!)

It could be considering a system with a separate subwoofer so you only need
smaller speakers mounted on your walls. This way you might be able to avoid
some of the bass problems normally associated with having your speakers too
close to the wall. Unfortunately I'm not up-to-date with who makes the best
of this type of speaker but I'm sure someone round here will help out.

The tweeters should normally be at ear-level when you're listening. So, in
your case, optimal is probably just high enough to be out of reach of your
kids!

Hi,

If you'd like to make your own here's a link to some small easy to make
boxes;
http://www.timn8er.com/Aurasound%20NS3.htm
And some more. I would make these if it were me
http://zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker18.html
What you will get from these is, superb stereo imaging and a deep sound
stage.

Both linked from;
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showt...105&highlight=

Aurasound and HiVi drive units are obtainable in Europe from;
http://www.spectrumaudio.de/

I position mine at just above ear level, I find this very important and when
I make some boxes I like to make sure that the drive unit is at the right
height.

Regards - Jem
