Not so if you have the damped version.

I have the damped version, currently mounted with a Shure V15 IV

I'm using an Ortophon SL and MC15 carts - but they're low output. No
tracking problems in practice - unless you try one of those test records
designed to show the V15 is the best thing since sliced bread. Only
doesn't sound it.

Dave, tell me more about these. not familiar with them. Do remember
Orthophon of yore but been
a long time since involved in this area.

Are you using an SME III with damper? Low output shouldn't be a problem.
I am using a QUAD 44, can get a MC module.

Richard.

They're ancient carts dating back to before the days of CD, but I had a
few good ones lying around, and since now prefer CD my LPs only get
occasional plays. It could well be there are better modern replacements.
Indeed I'd bet there are.

OK.

Yes so, even if you can manage the LF resonance, a low or medium
compliance MC will still put too much energy into that skinny arm.
That's *why* SME designed the V, fer goshsakes.

I moved from the SL15E through Denon 103D and a Fidelity Research
MC202 to my present A-T OC9, which is one of the most neutral carts
I've ever heard. The Ortofon has a distinctly warmer sound, which you
may of course prefer.

What he said!
I already have a Sure V15 Type IV - just in need of a new stylus!

Bummer - IIRC the US Library of Congress bought up the entire
remaining stock when Shure stopped making the V15 last year.

Sorry to 'hijack' this thread... but can you still get genuine Shure
replacement stylii for something like a V15/III? I have one of these, but
haven't replaced the stylus for some time. Don't use it a lot, but may need
a replacement in time.

Since a friend just purchased a s/h V15 III body and also a s/h NOS stylus,
and another friend without the net hasn't replaced his, er, probably ever;-
I went looking recently:

VN35E ~ $36.96USD
http://www.soundring.com.au/StyliInfo.cfm?StyliID=1491

VN35MR ~$50USD / $71.50NZD (not sure if original or not)
http://styli.co.nz/stylus-392.html

But you're in the UK ...

A V15III (their E.392) stylus is £35.00 from http://www.musonic.co.uk/
(doesn't say whether genuine or replacement - black body - no suffix)
Their web page uses some very slow/large scripts, for dialup or old PCs!

Strange, considering that styli.co.nz get some of their stock from musonic,
that their "392" (red, not black, body) should be cheaper here! But I gather
they have other sources and some new old stock, depending on brand.
You'd need to enquire whether it was an original or aftermarket one.
They happily ship overseas.
[$71.50NZD approx = £27.62 according to http://www.xe.com/ucc/ ]

Horrendous prices in the USA:

VN35MR $177.95USD (!) (original, one left; large pic)
http://www.turntableneedles.com/inde...OD&ProdID=9601
VN35E $135.95 (aftermarket "exact replacement")
http://www.turntableneedles.com/inde...OD&ProdID=9603

I see an MR just sold on Ebay for US $141.89

MR - "micro-ridge" ; even finer than "elliptical", I gather.
