Default Interconnects

Hi,

I've just bought a new turntable and have decided to get a seperate
phono stage this has left me in the market for a new interconnect.
Just wondering if there are any "giant killers" out there at the
moment, have a budget of up to £30.

Cheers,

I'll set the ball rolling by saying that in my experience, over 25
years and several dozen cables, I've never heard one iota of difference
brought on by a change of cables.

Nor have I.

Where's the phono pre-amp going? If straight into the leads as supplied
with the turntable (with a moving magnet cart) then anything after that
won't matter. However, if you extend or replace the cables to the pre-amp
you may well get a frequency response error, unless using a low impedance
MV cart.

this has left me in the market for a new interconnect.

The differences I've personally heard have been so minute that I discounted
them. They were at line level rather than phono. I'd say that adequate
mechanical quality & assembly can be got for well under £30.

Most of my own line level phono leads I made up myself with DNM flat ribbon
soldered onto reasonable quality phono plugs but fairly short - long enough
for equipment to be pulled forward to allow access. However, disconnecting
one's entire system then reconnecting every year can pay dividends for the
effort involved IMO.

The only real difference I ever heard was when substituting medium quality
speaker cables for 5A solid core lighting cable (NOT 15A ring mains cable
which was the fad the time). The 5A sounded awful!

Dunno where you'd get 5A solid core lighting cable. The stuff used in the
UK - 1mm TW&E is rated at 14 amps.

I dunno either - getting my currents in a twist!
